A Fairy Tale Ending

An idyllic setting from long, long ago
Had a fairy tale ending, a golden glow,
Set deep in the midst of a protective wood
With hope and promise clearly understood.

For us, though, this dream is roofless and spent.
Tiles scattered and torn, timbers laid bare,
The windows stare with glazed amazement
Grass growing on window cills in still air.

Saddened and silenced by too many gasps of pain
Abandoned and overgrown, never to flourish again.
The wind blows relentlessly, leaving no trace
Of our footsteps where we trudged with grace.

Can no one inherit the space left o’er yonder?
See the magic to be captured within these walls?
Pick up the threads and weave some wonder
Bring sparkling life to empty eyes, let laughter ring out?
